Together, we climb for Avery and all our cancer patients and families. We are so grateful to have Avery as our honored hero for our 2024 Big Climb Houston. We hope her story inspires you all to Climb. Conquer. Cure. so we can see more success stories like hers.
“Hi, my name is Avery, I am 15 years old. I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia at the age of 11 years old. I was in Texas children’s hospital from October 4th 2019 to April 15th 2020. Being in the hospital for that long was really hard on me, so I had to find ways to stay busy. There were many hobbies that I pursued during that time including drawing, braiding hair in every way possible, and even running a part- time nail salon outside my room for the other patients and nurses. Not being able to see friends, family, or many other people due to covid made it significantly harder but I knew I was not alone. My experience with cancer was hard, but knowing that there were and are so many other people who struggle with blood cancers every day makes it even harder.
Now that I am a long- term survivor of blood cancer, knowing that organizations like The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society are helping raise funds to find a cure for this terrible disease, helping to ensure that nobody will ever have to go through the experiences that so many people go through makes me feel overwhelmed with joy. The efforts of this organization assure me that others, beyond the medical field, are dedicated to finding a cure for blood cancers. Not only do they remind everyone who are currently going through the same experiences I have that people are working incredibly hard to find a cure, but they also give hope to families who are watching a family member go through this. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to everyone supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and events like the Big Climb. Your contributions make an immense difference, offering hope and healing to countless individuals. Thank you for being a crucial part of the fight against blood cancers.”
