Dear Family & Friends,
As you read this letter, I am both honored and excited to share with you that I am a candidate for the 2020 Man of the Year fundraising campaign benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).
Several months before I found out that I had been nominated, I wrote down a goal to get more involved in philanthropic efforts that were meaningful to me; the saying “ask and you shall receive” has never rang more true than in this moment. This was even more special because it was extremely personal. WHY?
At 15 years old I found out that my grandmother had been diagnosed with cancer and that really hit me hard. It may sound silly, but grandparents were like superheroes in my eyes. It was difficult to see her dealing with something so painful, and I felt like there wasn’t anything that I could do to help. It has been 5 years now since my grandmother lost her fight with cancer, but I am reminded daily of her strength. While I once felt like there wasn’t much that I could do to help; I now realize that there are other ways for me to help, give back, honor my grandmother, and provide support to so many others that are dealing with various types of cancers.
Specifically, I plan to use the first $50,000 raised to name a research grant in honor of my Grandmother Daisy.
Even in the face of a pandemic and economic volatility, my passion for the LLS mission has never been stronger, and neither has the need to help patients who are fighting for their lives every day. During this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, LLS is committed as ever to helping blood cancer patients and their families. Blood cancer patients face unique challenges during this pandemic and, as they always do, LLS is rising to the occasion.
In addition to current portfolio of patient services at LLS, they launched a new patient assistance program – The LLS COVID-19 Patient Financial Aid Program – which will provide $250 to eligible patients experiencing financial hardship due to the pandemic. This will help patients offset non-medical expenses such as food and other household expenses, rent and transportation.
It is likely that blood cancer has touched all of us in some way, and together we can help continue to make progress towards finding a cure. The research funded by LLS also helps to advance the treatment of other types of cancer such as skin, lung, brain, and breast as well as auto-immune disorders like diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, & Multiple Sclerosis.
This is the 10th Annual LLS Man & Woman of the Year campaign, and every dollar I raise on behalf of LLS during this campaign from May 7th - July 17th 2020 is a vote for me as "Man of the Year.” Your donation shows your desire to help further the lifesaving work that is being done by LLS including patient support, advocacy, education, and community services.
I am reaching out to you today to see if you would be interested in making a personal donation or being a corporate sponsor for my campaign. All donations are appreciated & are tax deductible. Every dollar counts, and together we can surpass my fundraising goal of $200,000.
You can make donations online through my fundraising page: https://pages.lls.org/mwoy/txg/houston20/dmcghee
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, and I appreciate your support with this meaningful campaign. If you have any questions or would like to know more about the objectives of LLS feel free to contact me at (713)228-7676 or dom@dayswithdom.com
All the best and with the utmost appreciation.
