What can I expect the day of the event?

Skiers from around the globe will be ripping the slopes and shredding the POW for an epic day of fun in Park City. Participants and supporters will enjoy the beautiful scenery, majestic mountains, and delicious food that the area has to offer. Throughout the day, there are several fun on-mountain activities and challenges that are sure to keep you swishing through the snow all day long. From our scavenger hunt and ski racecourse to our vertical challenge, there is something for everyone to have a blast on and off the mountain. Shred participants will also have access to a private lounge mid-mountain where you can take a quick snack break and warm up your toes. You will also be joined by Olympians, World Cup racers and Paralympians! After a full day on the slopes, join us for the ultimate Après Ski reception. Here, skiers can refuel with a hot meal while enjoying our awards and celebration program where we recognize the collective impact your fundraising dollars will have on the Blood Cancer United mission.

Can I really ski with Olympians, World Cup racers and Paralympians?

Yes, we wouldn’t make that up! The top fundraising teams for Shred For Red will have exclusive access to an Olympian, World Cup racer or Paralympian who will join their team on the slopes for the day! Get an up-close and personal ski experience with these world-class athletes and ski like a pro right alongside them. Get to know some of the Olympians and Paralympians who have previously participated in Shred For Red and may be with us this year as well!

Is there an age limit to participate?

Shred For Red is open to all ages and skiing abilities. Please note that youth 17 and under MUST participate with a registered adult.

Can I snowboard on event day?

Deer Valley is a ski-only resort, so for the in-person event on March 28th, snowboarding will not be an option. But – if you’re more of a snowboarder, please check out the option to participate virtually to create your own experience and still support Shred For Red.

What if I’m not a skier at all? Can I still participate?

Of course! Fundraising participants who wish to skip the slopes can still join us for the Après Ski Reception in the afternoon to celebrate with your team. There are lots of fun things to do in the neighboring areas before you head over for the Après.

What’s the altitude at Deer Valley Resort?

The base altitude of Deer Valley is 6,570 feet (2,003 meters). The altitude in the mid-mountain area is 8,100 feet (2,469 meters). The altitude at the Empire summit is 9,570 feet (2,917 meters). The town of Park City is located at 7,000 feet (2,134 meters) above sea level and chairlifts enable us to ski up to 10,000 feet (3,048 meters).

What do you do to prevent altitude sickness while at Deer Valley Resort?

Many people feel the effects of the high-altitude levels when they first arrive. Common symptoms include tiredness, shortness of breath with exertion and headaches. Easy ways to alleviate symptoms are to drink lots of water and take aspirin. Those experiencing serious symptoms such as loss of appetite, shortness of breath, cough and headache that do not respond to rest and aspirin should promptly visit a doctor. The effects of alcohol are also often heightened due to the altitude. Drink a little bit less than you may be used to and you will feel better in the morning. Are there any tips I should know about coming to the mountains?

Please be aware the sun is stronger at high altitudes and combined with the reflection from the snow can result in badly sunburned skiers. Always wear sunscreen as UV rays can penetrate even on cloudy days.

Weather in Park City can change rapidly; dress and plan accordingly. Hats, gloves and proper ski attire are recommended. During extremely cold weather, be aware of frostbite – if you feel pain, tingling or numbness, or experience discoloration in your fingers, toes or ears, go inside and warm up.

What if I already have an IKON pass or a season pass to Deer Valley?

Awesome! Please do let us know if that’s the case so we are aware that you will not need a lift ticket from us. There is not a reduced fundraising level for IKON or Deer Valley pass holders to participate in Shred For Red. All proceeds raised will continue to benefit Blood Cancer United.
